Kickapoo Watershed Focus of Jan Holder’s Watercolors

at McLean County Arts Center

Jan Holder’s solo exhibition, Kickapoo Watershed Watercolors, will be on view in the Arts Center’s Armstrong Gallery June 3 through July 23, 2005.

Jan Holder’s fascination with the Kickapoo Watershed coincided with her move to a home bordering the creek. With nature literally at her doorstep, she responded by making watercolors of her land at all times of day throughout the year. Her fondness and concern for the creek go beyond her art-making, Holder is President of the Friends of the Kickapoo Creek, organized in 2002 to protect and enhance the watershed in all of its flora and fauna, land and water for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations.

Holder describes her fascination with the subject manner: "Living year round in our small woods here in Illinois has allowed me to observe, photograph, and paint an enchanted, natural wonder. This park-like setting presents me with an environment that captures my visual attention so vividly, that each "eye-full" triggers a response to translate and interpret what I see onto the two-dimensional surface. I’ve attempted to record my daily experience, which may in some way help celebrate and honor what we all take for granted. The Kickapoo Watershed is a part of McLean County history. Its beauty and natural resource are an inspiration."

In conjunction with this exhibition and the Mackinaw River Project* in the Brandt Gallery, the Arts Center offers Capturing Nature with Watercolor, Children’s Art Workshops taught by Jan Holder on Saturday, June 11. Working from photographs, students will use watercolor to express the unique elements of their surrounding landscapes. The workshop is free and open to all children in the age groups listed.
